Types of Government Holidays

The Government holidays can be distinguished into the following types as listed below:

  • Festival Holidays: Festivals holidays are allotted for the celebration of activities and rituals. While some of the festival holidays are granted to all Government employees across the country, some of these are granted as per the State Government regulations, based on festivals specific to certain states. For instance, popular Government holidays across India are Diwali, Holi, Dussehra, Eid, and Christmas, among others, while festivals such as Bhigu, Guru Arjun Dev Ji Jayanti, or Chhath Puja are observed only in Kerala, Punjab and Bihar respectively.
  • National Holidays: National holidays are the gazetted holidays observed all the states across India. Republic Day, Independence Day & Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti are three National holidays in India. On these days, it is compulsory for all banks, financial institutions, schools, colleges and offices to remain shut.
  • State Government Holidays: The State Government holidays may vary from one state to another. For instance, Maharashtra Day is a holiday in Maharashtra, Goa Liberation Day is a holiday in Goa, Haryana Day is a Government holiday in Haryana, and Bihar diwas is a holiday in Bihar.
